Tarpon fishing at Tarpon Caye Lodge can start before breakfast. It's not uncommon to see fish rolling around the island in the morning, and having a rod rigged and ready is usually a good idea. After breakfast, you'll meet your guide at the dock and head out to spend the day looking for fish.

Tarpon have a way of letting you know they're around. A fish rolls in a lagoon, another explodes while chasing baitfish along a mangrove shoreline, and suddenly everyone on the boat is looking in the same direction. Some fish give you time to set up and make a good presentation. Others show themselves once and leave you wondering where they went.

Tarpon are generally pretty willing participants around here. That doesn't mean every fish eats, but good shots are often rewarded. Once you're tight, clear the line and hold on. Things tend to get chaotic once a tarpon realizes it's hooked. If everything stays connected, enjoy it. Then go do it again.

When the skiffs return, tarpon are still around. Grab a drink and join everyone at the lodge, or keep a rod handy and look for rolling fish before dinner. At Tarpon Caye, some of the most convenient tarpon fishing you'll ever do can happen within sight of your cabin.

How We Fly Fish For Tarpon In Belize

Fly fishing for tarpon around Tarpon Caye is largely a visual game. We look for rolling fish, wakes, pushes, and dark shapes laid up or moving through the water. Sometimes finding tarpon is the easy part. Figuring out what they're doing and how they want to be approached is where our guides earn their keep.

Long casts aren't always necessary. The tarpon here are very accommodating to new fly anglers. Being able to lay one out a long way at a rolling fish or make a Hail Mary at a string of swimmers will definitely increase your odds.

We typically fish baitfish patterns on floating and intermediate lines, depending on the depth and how the fish are behaving. Presentations vary. A laid-up fish may require a soft cast and a fly placed close enough to get its attention, while moving fish often require leading them and letting the fly intercept their path. More often than not, a fly presented naturally gets bit.
