Fly Fish Belize With Tarpon Caye Lodge

Fly fishing for permit, tarpon, and bonefish in one of the least pressured fisheries in the Caribbean.

Belize has earned a reputation as one of the world's premier saltwater fly fishing destinations, and for good reason. Endless flats, protected lagoons, and mangrove shorelines create ideal habitat for permit, tarpon, and bonefish throughout the year. Situated among some of Southern Belize’s most productive inshore fly fishing habitat lies Tarpon Caye Lodge.

Located on a private island about 15 miles off the coast of Placencia, Tarpon Caye Lodge places anglers in the heart of the action. Productive permit flats, resident tarpon, and healthy bonefish populations are literally at our doorstep, allowing our guides to maximize fishing time instead of watching the clock.

Whether you're fly fishing with one of our experienced Belizean guides or exploring nearby water on your own through one of our DIY fly fishing packages, every day offers the opportunity to sight fish for some of the Caribbean's most sought-after gamefish.

The day begins with coffee as the sun comes up over the Caribbean. Grab a cup to go, and a fly rod, and take a stroll to our Home Flat and see what is tailing, or wander to the lagoon and watch for rolling tarpon. Enjoy a family style breakfast after your morning stroll and grab your gear for a memorable day on the water.

Every guest at Tarpon Caye Lodge has different expectations, and we try to be as accommodating as possible to everyone. Be prepared to fish hard (if you so desire), or casually (if that is more your pace). Have lunch on a remote atoll, or skip lunch if you are inclined to fish through it. Enjoy your day on the water the way you want.

Upon returning to the dock, fellowship is a big part of the experience for many guests. Drinks are had, flies are tied, stories are shared, meals are enjoyed, lies are told, and friendships are built around Tarpon Caye Lodge in the evenings. For others, privacy, tranquility, and fly fishing is paramount, and the flats around the lodge provide a great escape before turning in for the night in one of our private guest cabins.

Days here are structured, but not rigid, and allow Tarpon Caye Lodge to provide exceptional fly fishing experiences year-round for anglers of all abilities in one of the least pressured fisheries in the Caribbean.

How We Fly Fish Belize

Successful fly fishing in Belize starts with understanding the tides. Water movement influences where fish feed, how they travel, and when certain areas produce best. Rather than following the same routine every day, our guides adjust the plan to match the conditions, moving between expansive flats, mangrove-lined lagoons, and nearby channels as the tide dictates.

Most fly fishing opportunities involve sight fishing. Guides pole quietly across the flats searching for cruising permit, laid-up tarpon, or schools of bonefish before positioning the boat for an angler to present a fly. Depending on conditions, anglers may remain on the skiff or step out to wade productive flats where stealth becomes just as important as the cast itself.

Every day is different, but the objective remains the same: put anglers in front of fish and give them the best possible opportunities to make perfect shots.
